As our world has progressed and developed, technology has done so too. Now we all depend on technology hugely in our everyday lives, whether this is our phone, laptop, tablet, etc. Due to everyone being more absorbed by technology there is less inter-personal communication, especially within younger generations.
With our society's gradual withdrawal from the community, people are becoming more selfish and in turn caring less for other people. With global warming in full flow and action needing to be taken right now, this is not the mindset we need. With people feeling less responsible for others' welfare then they are less likely to think about the consequences of climate change on other people, and so less likely to take action.
This leaves designers in a strange contradictory limbo. Personally, I think that technology will be key to solving global warming issues, but this information is demonstrating that at the same time that technology is actually making people care less about the issue subconsciously. Therefore, as a designer, trying to design products, services, and systems to save the planet, to what extent should this be taken into consideration?
On the other hand without technology, the government, media, etc would not be able to inform the public of the global issue nearly as easily and efficiently or let the public know what they can do to help. Overall I do believe that technology will be key to solving global environmental issues, but it is a point of consideration, thinking about the anti-social impacts of some technology.
