Everywhere you look there are cars, buses, and taxis. They are all big and bulky and dominate our cities, and why should this surprise us, because we built the long wide roads on which they travel. This does not need to be the case!
Our cars have large bodies to allow for crashes. They are given large bonnets known as the 'crumple zone' to protect passengers if they are in collisions. If all of our cars were autonomous then there would be far fewer crashes, cars would not have to be as large and then in turn roads could be smaller. We are encouraging this self-destructive polluting on a mass scale, by building these huge roads for cars and so if there was less space for cars then there would be fewer cars!
Another perspective would be if there were no roads at all, and there was just a more available, efficient public transport system.
Realistically, these autonomous vehicles and public transport systems are the future, but this does not mean that roads will be abolished. The two may work in harmony together initially, like Chinas proposal to have futuristic buses running over cars.
I do believe that the use of roads in cities should be stopped, as it pollutes and also is much quicker and efficient to use public transport in most cities anyway, due to traffic congestion. Understandably using cars is convenient for people, and they can be comfortable within their own space, but here is a design possibility, to create a public transport system that is fast, efficient and also comfortable.
