New way of thinking

Updated: Mar 26, 2020

When thinking about designing a product, I often find myself thinking about the end goal far too quickly. I start to think about designing a ‘thing’, whereas designing should be making sense of things. Stuart Bailey made the point that the designer can make it difficult for themselves when they try and see and end goal of a product too soon into the design process.

Another aspect of Stuarts talks that I actually found very insightful is of the same theme. Where instead of trying to start with the product, flip the design thinking and start with a system. What services does the system use? What products are needed to then piece it all together? This way of approaching design allows for a lot more scope as now your idea has many different directions it could be taken.

In regards to the future of food, I was thinking about food waste and what can be made out of the food waste in our own homes. This approach was feeling a bit flat as I could only really think of basic household products etc that could be made from food waste. On the other hand, if I were to look at the food waste system itself and the process of food waste. With this new method of thinking, I started to think about the use of bin men and their role in food waste. As a community, we see bin men as the people who come to take away our rubbish, whereas if we changed our perception of food waste and thought of it as a resource, then suddenly the role of a bin man feels a lot more significant. And then the next step of where this resource is taken can be explored.
