‘We don’t do art we solve problems’

Updated: Apr 6, 2020

Charles and Ray Eames were two of the most influential designers of all time, designing products of all sorts and even delving into film making. Charles was an architecture drop out who met Ray a painter in 1941 who then became his second wife. Together they created their own studio and began the work that would leave a legacy like no other.

The studio that they ran was described as a ‘circus’ as there was no structure or order to it and the layout would change daily. Within their studio, they had many people working for them who all brought their own ideas and influence into the mix. Visitors in the studio would say ‘watching everyone was like watching people take their brains out and need them’. Charles was the brains and the engineering behind the ideas and Ray then brought the colour and artistry to the work. It was said that Charles and Ray wanted to make the most wonderful experience you could have with your eyes.

What the couple achieved in their time was remarkable and have left a lasting footprint on the world of design. Their approach to creating new ideas was unheard of though now can be seen in every corner of the industry. For me what is most intriguing about the couple is how their own relationship is able to produce such innovative work. The brain of an architect thinking logically about how things work then cross-linked with a painter, where colour, texture and pattern helped mould the aesthetic. For me, this is so interesting as I am a design engineer, where I am expected to sometimes find a definite answer, whereas other times there is no answer and you have to make your own answer. So seeing the two different fields come together and spark such pioneering creations is very inspirational.
