Adidas has recently launched their newest football boot series named the Adidas Predator 20+. As a product designer footwear is not really something that you think of when ideating as it feels like a very niche area where only the specialists in that field should be exploring. Though in recent years I have realized how the ergonomics and design thinking has really been evolving in the football boots world. This new Adidas range really epitomizes this.
Football boots have evolved massively within the past few years, where they are being redesigned to feel like they are part of the body rather than a separate entity. When I got my first pair of football boots they were hard, chunky and unforgiving, whereas now boots almost seem moulded to the body.
The new design is based around having a sock which is attached to the boot making the boot feel more comfortable and like it is a part of your body. This allows greater mobility and speed as the boot does not hinder one's movement as much as previously designed boots.
