Great Design: droog

Updated: Apr 1, 2020

Droog are a Dutch conceptual Desing company based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. They were founded in 1993 by Designer Gijs Bakker and Historian Renny Ramakers.

Droog is no ordinary design company as they take a different perspective on design, where they tackle serious matters but treat them in a playful way. They have the famous saying, 'Twist the existing, to reframe your question'.

Droog is the dutch word for dry, and this is reflected in their work, as a lot of it has demonstrated very dry humor. An example of this would be the 'do hit

chair-hit' and the 'do hit chair-non hit'.

Droog is also very well known for its sustainable approach to design. They create pieces made from already recycled products and turn them into something new and innovative. Examples of this are,

'the milk bottle light'

'the rag chair'

'one-day paper waste'

'One-day paper waste', is an interesting product as it is trying to highlight what one day of paper waste looks like in static, physical form. Who's waste this is is unclear, but I understand the point being made. The issue with this piece is that even though it is taking waste paper to create this table, the paper is suspended in resin, and this isn't as sustainable. This product is about as droog as it gets, creating a product that makes a statement, but at the same time probably isn't the most viable.

My personal favourite of all the droog products is known as 'tea for one' which is just a teapot that has basically been chopped in half. It is this dry humour which I love about this product, and also because even though it seems ridiculous, it is actually quite cute and appealing.

Below are some more of my favourite pieces by droog.
