Great Design: Explanatory Animations

Updated: Apr 6, 2020

With the coronavirus pandemic worsening rapidly across the globe, it is obvious that not enough measures are being taken to prevent the spread of the virus. Many people are not thinking about the implications of them carrying on with their daily lives as if it were normal. This attitude is leading to the spread being uncontrollable and will create huge difficulty for health organizations like the NHS.

This is where the role of designers can come into play to help demonstrate to people why they need to stay indoors and social distance themselves from other people. Animated illustrations by cartoonist Toby Morris and microbiologist Siouxsie Wiles were posted on a website in New Zealand showing the result of social distancing and how it can delay the rapid spread of the virus.

This simple animation makes it clear to the general public the impact a single person can have in slowing down the spread. It is a lot easier to understand when it is demonstrated in such simple and clear terms. They also drew up another animation showing the actions that we will all have on the health organizations if we do not take the virus seriously.

This animation again shows how effective design and communication can help convey the importance of social distancing and taking government advice seriously can prevent health organizations from being overwhelmed.
