Great Design: Near-Future Autonomous Riding

Updated: Apr 6, 2020

Benjamin Hubert is an industrial designer who has come up with an autonomous vehicle concept 'Joyn'. It is a sustainable concept that makes the idea of ride-sharing a more appealing form of travel. Ridesharing is already a concept in modern society with apps like Uber having the option to share a trip as a cheaper alternative.

The interior has a modular pair design, where two seats will face opposite each other. This gives the option to have a 'buddy' seat where you are able to see each other face to face or you can make this pair private by closing the dynamic wings that can open and close.

I do like the flexibility of this seating arrangement as it can be sociable or private. One small problem I'd say is that if you are traveling in a group of 3 or 5, unlike on a bus or in a taxi, there will be somebody isolated. This is not a huge problem, though it should be a design consideration.

The interior design of each pod is said to be very residential based, using a soft color pallet which is more inviting and comforting than the typical transport interior. Hubert says that the interiors are a mix of technical performance and task-based features and materials. The interior is made up of pineapple leather and then natural fibers for the purpose of sustainability, and the exterior will be a glass bubble.

Firstly, I don't believe that the color pallet is that homely, as the use of dark turquoise and cool grey isn't very warm or inviting. There is obviously an aesthetic aspect to the design, which makes this minimal and bland color pallet understandable, though when you are advertising a 'soft human-focussed space', I would say these colors do not match the criteria. Also, the use of a glass bubble exterior does not actually allow the privacy that is being advertised, as passengers will be fully exposed to the passing public. I do like this idea a lot and think it could actually be a great form of transport in the near future, though as it is just a concept I believe that there should be more thought put into the colors and the use of full glass exterior.
