Dale Chihuly is an American glass sculptor born September 20, 1941, in Tacoma, Washington. He is world-renowned in the blown glass field for his incredible masterpieces, where he creates glass sculptures like no other. For more than 50 years Chihuly has pushed the boundaries of contemporary art and captured the minds of many using vibrant colors and captivating forms.
Chihuly has countless great pieces of work that could be talked about, but for me, my favourite is the 'Golden Celadon Basket Set'.
Now purely based on the form and colour of the outer shell this is already a magnificent object, but then within this outer wrapping are smaller more delicate objects, which seem unclear due to the mistiness of the outer bowl. The contrast created from this is truly compelling, yet it is the way that the piece captures the light and bends it, and warps it, as it passes through that tops it off.
Dale also has an installation series, where all the pieces are large glass sculptures. Each one is placed in an environment and creates a uniquely immersive experience.
